Sunday School Throughout the Year
We have Sunday school for all age levels before the worship service from 9:30 - 10:15. This is a time when people gather together to develop a better understanding of scripture, to grow in their faith, and to prepare their hearts and minds for worship. We also have a nursery for infants and toddlers during Sunday school and worship.
Children and Youth Education
During the school year, the Pre-K through high school students work with the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum which follows the lectionary of the worship service. Their dedicated teachers also gear subjects and curriculum appropriately towards the needs and issues of their classes.
Adult Education
During the school year (September to June), adults can chose from classes that meet simultaneously. Adults are free to attend different ones on a weekly basis or remain in one class for the duration. The classes currently being offered are:
Nurturing Our Faith Bible Study
Led by Bill Herzog (in the Everts Room)
Using the book Mark for Everyone, by N.T Wright, this class will discuss the Gospel of Mark, its historical context and its implications for our lives today.
Faith in the World Book Discussion
Led by Heather Palmer (in the Chapel)
Discussing the book: The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith, by Marcus Borg
World-renowned Jesus scholar Marcus J. Borg shows how we can live passionately as Christians in today’s world by practicing the timeless elements of Christian faith. (This is a 10 week study that will take us into Advent).
Education: Not Just on Sundays
Education is an important part of our life at First Baptist in Newton throughout the year. We have a weekly children's fellowship after the children's message in the worship service. Twice a month, the youth fellowship (6th grade - 12th grade) meet for fellowship, dinner, and bible study. There are regular educational opportunities such as: Growing in Faith youth series, small group bible studies, and increased intergenerational programs. We also hold special classes during the Lenten and Advent seasons. Watch for more information as the year progresses.
