No Room for Cantaloupes

Imagine a typical 5 five gallon bucket, except clear. See-through and empty.  Is the bucket full?  Well, yes and no.  It's full of air, but not full in terms of what can be carried (which is the purpose of a bucket after all, to carry stuff).  Next, look to your right. There is a pile of stones, each one about the size of a cantaloupe.  How many cantaloupe sized stones can fit in your bucket?  Well, don't just sit there, fill it up.

How many, 6?  Good.

Now, is the bucket full?

Well, yes, and no. No more cantaloupe sized stones will fit, but look over there...next to where the stones were. Right, the pile of gravel.  Can you get some gravel in the bucket?  Good. Go for it.

Now, is the bucket full?

Well, yes and no.  No more gravel will fit, but look to your left.  See the pile of sand?  ...you see where I'm going with this, right?

Good. Let's skip ahead.

Fill the bucket with sand then grab the hose and see how much water will fit.  More than you thought, huh?

So now we finally have a full bucket.  Steven Covey was fond of saying, 'Don't prioritize your schedule. schedule your priorities.' In other words, put in the biggest rocks first, otherwise you will find yourself in the 'thick of thin things'.  In our case, putting in gravel and sand first leaves no room for canteloupes, does it?

So, open your calendar. Where are your canteloupes?
