Why FBC?

PictureSean and Lynn Witty

"We think critically about religion - especially our own, but want it to touch our hearts and acts as well as our heads. We neither run from Jesus, nor think we own him.  A wide range of music and other elements of the arts and popular culture are welcome as part of our worship and reflections on the life we’re living and the life we want to live."

- FBC member from Newton

It’s not easy to visit a church for the first time.  Here is some info that might help:

Our community gathers for worship on Sunday mornings at 10am in the Sanctuary, which is a big beautiful space dating back to 1888. We gather to sing, to pray, and to listen.  We celebrate communion on the first Sunday of each month with an open table.

We meet to discover the way of Jesus, to connect with community, and to explore ways we can serve one another and others.  New people energize and deepen our experience together.  We consider it a gift when you visit.

Our service , which lasts one hour, appeals to those looking for a forward thinking and inclusive worship experience that draws on music and liturgy both old and new.

You Might be Wondering...

Where should I park?
There is a parking lot behind the church that all are invited to use.  The entrance is off Centre Street directly alongside the church.  Once you are parked, you may enter through the entry door to in the more modern building (the Fogg Building).  The Sanctuary and Chapel are up the stairs to the right.

What if I don't have a car?
The Green Line (Riverside) Newton Centre T Stop  is a very short walk from the church.  On Sunday mornings, join us through the big front doors, or come around to the parking lot entrance.

What activities are available for my children on Sunday mornings?
We love kids.  If you have children, there are several options to choose from. Children are always welcome to stay in the sanctuary in worship (even noisy babies). For those who would like, a nursery is available for little ones from birth through two years of age (available from 9:45 am – noon) and the Sprouts room is available for kids 3 up to kindergarten.

At about 10:15am, children in kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to gather for a time of connecting, creating, and interacting with stories from the Bible.

All the adults who work with our kids are well established participants in our community, are CORI’ed, and very experienced with kids.

When you say, "All are Welcome,"  what does that really mean?
It means you - you - are welcome.  How you dress, what gender your partner is, what you believe about God, your experience of church (good, bad or nonexistent) - it all adds to our community.  We are on a journey together, learning from one another.   Your presence, experiences and perspectives enrich us all.

What should I wear?
Feel free to come as you are and dress as you’d like. On Sunday mornings, you will find all different sorts of people from all different walks of life. Some people wear a tie or a dress and others come with tattoos and jeans. Some people come with tattoos wearing a tie or a dress. You get the picture.

What about "Sunday School" for adults?
At 11:15am each Sunday, there are opportunities to gather in smaller groups to connect and pursue an area of interest. Currently we have groups studying Biblical Archeology, practicing Lectio Divina (praying with texts from the Bible), discussing Parenting, and connecting as younger adults.

Is your building handicap accessible?
Absolutely. There is a wheelchair ramp in the front lawn (facing the corner of Beacon and Cente Steets) and reserved parking is available in the parking lot behind the church. at each of these entrances as well.

Other info:
There is coffee, drinks, and snacks set up in the gathering area outside the sanctuary ("The Chapel").  You’re invited to hang out in the gathering area (just outside the sanctuary) before worship or to sit in the sanctuary.
